In the DATUM collection of modular tableware, the engineering precision of Foster + Partners Industrial Design meets the craft expertise of FÜRSTENBERG, Germany's second-oldest porcelain manufacturer. Developed to bring a pure contemporary aesthetic and a focused functionality to the table, Datum comprises a dimensionally linked family of plates, cups, mugs and bowls.
Alongside simplicity of form, one of the principal goals of the design is modularity - making sure the pieces were interchangeable and stackable to facilitate storage and transportation. This has been achieved through the use of a grid matrix, which allowed the design team to explore the relationship and interplay between every piece in the collection, thereby enabling additional functionality - such as plates also serving as lids for bowls when you need to keep food warm or store it in a fridge. This functional flexibility requires a degree of geometric precision that is especially challenging in porcelain. The manufacture of fine porcelain at FÜRSTENBERG is rooted in the precision and expertise of its skilled craftspeople. FÜRSTENBERG's rich history in the production of fine porcelain and commitment to the craft made them ideal collaborators for the range. Throughout the design process, the design team sought input from various internationally renowned chefs, which informed the design of the range.
DATUM is available in white with a classic gloss glaze and a matt satin glaze on the external face. The interplay between gloss and matt white expresses the unique tactility, purity and reflectivity of the material. The range is also available in stone grey and slate black.
