The Lumina Dot pendant light began as an idea to create a 'disc of light'. An assembly of two parallel discs connected by a metal stem, its simple form belies an inherent complexity that pushes the boundaries of existing technology.
The smaller disc – made of machined aluminium – contains a ring of optically engineered LEDs that cast light to reflect off the larger spun aluminium disc above. This creates a soft, diffused light. The high-powered led source would normally require a much larger surface to dissipate the generated heat. To maintain the small diameter of the lower disk, the team devised an elegant solution using a heat pipe to transfer the energy to the larger disk above.
