Foster + Partners, in collaboration with OXMAN, has designed an integrated lab, workshop and studio space located in a purpose-built 36,000 square-foot facility in New York City. The lab spans two levels, offering ample indoor and outdoor spaces that reflect OXMAN's commitment to designing with, by, and for nature. The facility includes a state-of-the-art workshop, digital fabrication facilities, a prototyping and robotics shop, and a wet lab with customized grow rooms, providing an ideal environment for experimental work and innovation.
Foster + Partners Industrial Design has designed the flexible workstations and integrated display systems, enabling OXMAN team members to reconfigure their environment to suit various tasks. A key feature of the space is the seven-meter-long desks, custom-crafted from a single length of solid oak, with concealed storage and an innovative support structure. These sustainable oak desks are sourced from hand-selected trees across over 80 forests, ensuring both quality and ethical sourcing. The furniture is designed to enhance the collaborative and dynamic nature of the studio, with each piece contributing to a seamless, functional, and cohesive workspace.
The studio's design emphasizes natural materials, with a welcoming library space and an open-plan workspace featuring vaulted ceilings and expansive glazing for breathtaking views of the landscaped terrace. A central atrium provides natural light and acts as the heart of the space, while the second level focuses on research and design, with modular lab furniture, mobile storage, and adaptable spaces that foster creativity and flexibility. Customisable 'supercharger totems' allow employees to work anywhere, further enhancing the studio's dynamic and innovative environment.
